New Plymouth District Council puts backups in the cloud with Revera Vault.
With projects underway to digitise NPDC’s remaining paper-based information, Dowsing expects the council’s 27 TBs of data to keep growing. Priced at just $0.06 per GB/month, Vault keeps costs to a minimum. What’s more, NPDC will soon retire its tape backup infrastructure
NPDC's Vault experience
Quick start: With the help of a Revera engineer, NPDC changed its CommVault backup target from tape to Revera Vault. Vault’s compatibility with Amazon’s S3 means connecting to backup systems like CommVault is quick and easy.
Managed performance: Vault’s cloud gateway marries bandwidth dedicated to incremental and full backups – so business users never complain about slow systems.
No surprises: With data in the cloud, the cost and hassle of maintaining backup infrastructure is history. But what about one-off costs for extracting data from cloud backup? Not with Vault – extracting data is free.
Secure: NPDC’s CommVault backup system encrypts data. But Vault goes further, adding layers of performance and security, including synchronous replication across three geo-diverse data centres in New Zealand, continuous data integrity audits and repair, and 99.999999999% object durability.
"Our backup tapes were stored offsite, but not out of region. Cloud was the easy option to fix that.” - NPDC's ICT Manager Wayne Dowsing.

“Vault’s per-GB pricing is on a par with public cloud storage – and our data stays local. Why wouldn’t you use it?”
